This concert was initially planned as the closing performance of the 30th edition of our festival in 2020, held under the motto of ‘Life and Death’ and postponed due to the COVID pandemic. It is dedicated to German Lutheran sacred music, specifically to the emblematic genre of funeral music. The concert features music from J.S. Bach (1685–1750) and G.Ph. Telemann (1681–1767), whose destinies brought them together a number of times during their long careers. The audience will hear two major works, both of which were created during Bach and Telemann’s early years. Bach’s Cantata ‘Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit’ BWV 106 was probably composed around 1708, while Telemann’s ‘Du aber Daniel, gehe hin’ TWV 4-17 is likely to have been written in 1710. Both works masterfully translate into music the meaning of the following Biblical verse from Romans 8:18 – “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” – foreshadowing the concepts of Weltschmerz and Todessehnsucht long before these ideas were born.

Free admission to the concert, prior reservation is necessary
