An Wasserflüssen Babylon
Organ works by Johann Adam Reincken (1643–1722) and his contemporaries

Marcin Szelest – organ (Poland)

Marcin Szelest’s organ recital is a tribute to one of the greatest North German organists, Johann Adam Reincken, to mark the 300th anniversary of his death. Reincken reigned over the famous instrument at St. Catherine’s Church in Hamburg for almost 60 years (1663–1722). His younger colleague, Georg Böhm, was organist at St. Johannis in Lüneburg, while Reincken’s friend Dietrich Buxtehude held the position of organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. The magnificent chorale fantasia ‘An Wasserflüssen Babylon’ is a compendium of styles and techniques bearing witness to the composer’s broad musical horizons, which influenced the German organ school – and organ music as a whole – for the centuries to come.
Marcin Szelest is Professor of organ at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow, and an active performer as an organ soloist or with numerous soloists, choirs, orchestras and period instrument ensembles, in addition to his work as a musicologist and editor. One of his latest notable contributions is an edition of the Braunsberg/Oliwa Organ Tablature, recently published by ‘Fontes Musicae in Polonia’.
