Soprano Nuria Rial The Accademia del Piacere ensemble (Spain): Rodney Prada on viola da gamba Rami Alqhai on violone Johanna Rose on viola da gamba Miguel Rincón on Baroque guitar Javier Núñez on harpsichord Fahmi Alqhai (director) on viola da gamba
Accademia del Piacere is one of the best-known ensembles specialising in early Spanish music, having gained international recognition for its innovative projects, virtuosity and lively, emotional connection with the audience. Led by the charismatic Fahmi Alqhai, the ensemble brings history to life as a vivid, emotional experience. The musicians of the ensemble are able to offer a fresh perspective on the historical repertoire: in this concert, together with the distinguished soprano Nuria Rial, they delve into the music of Spanish Baroque theatre, reviving the works of one of the most renowned composers, organist and director of the royal chapel, Sebastián Durón (1660–1716). The Benedictine Enlightenment scholar Benito Jerónimo Feijóo, who lived shortly afterwards, accused Durón of Italianising Spanish music, but today we would probably call this a modernisation of the old Spanish style.
The concert, which blends passion, virtuosity and the unique spirit of the Baroque, sees the performers breathe new life into the arias from Durón’s stage works, dedicated to the inexhaustible theme of love. Alongside these, the programme also features works by Durón’s contemporaries, showcasing the influence of Italian music and the broader European musical context of the time.

The exceptional nature of its innovative projects, the musicians’ virtuosity and the strong personality of its artistic director have made the Spanish early music ensemble Accademia del Piacere one of the most prominent ensembles of its kind in Europe. Accademia is particularly highly regarded for its compelling rapport with the audience and its approach to early music as a living and emotionally charged phenomenon—an idea that the musicians convey to their listeners from the heart.
Accademia del Piacere unveiled new facets by performing early music from the Italian Seicento, the Spanish Renaissance and Spanish Baroque theatre works. For this endeavour, the ensemble has won numerous awards, including the 2020 Opus Klassik prize for the best solo vocal opera recitative (the programme Muera Cupido with Nuria Rial), the Choc de Classica (France), the Prelude Award (Netherlands) and the GEMA award for the best Spanish Baroque ensemble (2016 and 2017). Accademia del Piacere often transcends the boundaries of early music: the projects Las Idas y las Vueltas and Diálogos (featuring the flamenco singers Arcángel and Rocío Márquez respectively) were awarded the Giraldillo prize at the Seville Flamenco Biennial (2012 and 2016).
The ensemble performs at prestigious classical music stages in Europe and around the world: the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna and Berlin Konzerthaus, the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Oji Hall in Tokyo, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, and many other venues in the USA, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, Colombia, Spain and beyond. Accademia del Piacere concerts are regularly broadcast live on radio stations belonging to the European Broadcasting Union network, and are also featured on television programmes (ARTE, Spain’s TVE, Japan’s NHK, and others).
Fahmi Alqhai is regarded as one of the most outstanding and prestigious viola da gamba players in the world and is one of the most significant interpreters of early music of our time. His approach to the early repertoire is expressive and communicative; through his artistic vision and creativity, he brings together different cultures. Born in Seville in 1976 to a Syrian father and a Palestinian mother, Alqhai embodies the cultural dialogue of the Mediterranean region. Alqhai spent his early childhood in Syria, where he began his musical training. He continued his studies in Seville under Ventura Rico, and later studied with Paolo Pandolfo at the Schola Cantorum in Basel and with Vittorio Ghielmi at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano. Alongside his musical studies, he also qualified as a dentist at the University of Seville.
He is the artistic director of FeMAS (Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla), the oldest and foremost early music festival in Spain.
His projects with flamenco performers are particularly innovative, while he also collaborates with contemporary and jazz musicians such as Uri Caine. His solo albums A piacere (2014) and The Bach Album (2016) further cemented his reputation as a visionary performer, with both winning numerous GEMA, Scherzo and Melómano awards. In 2018, he was awarded the Medal of the City of Seville.
Since his youth, Alqhai has collaborated regularly with renowned international early music ensembles such as Hespèrion XXI and Il Suonar Parlante, and has also performed as a soloist with orchestras including the Spanish National Orchestra, the Real Filharmonía de Galicia, the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne and the Seville Baroque Orchestra.
He has recorded music for the labels Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Alia Vox, Glossa and Winter & Winter, as well as for his own label, Alqhai & Alqhai.
